Summer 2009 Letter to ParentsAdvance Academy announces a new critical reading class for the high school student. Advance Academy is offering a new critical reading class for high schools students who want to improve their grades in their AP English, history, and social science classes. Oftentimes students are given difficult passages to read in their classes, but they are not taught the strategies they need to read the texts successfully and answer difficult close reading questions. This class will teach students the strategies they need to help them earn higher grades in high school and on the SAT and ACT tests. Plus, the course will use texts commonly assigned at the advanced high school level, providing students with a significant advantage over students who encounter these texts for the first time in class. Students who earn high SAT and ACT scores often report that the best preparation for these tests come from studying texts at the AP level. Because students working at the AP level are used to reading difficult texts and answering precise, sometimes tricky questions, they find SAT-level texts and questions less stressful and therefore earn a higher overall score. Not only will the class benefit high school students now, but it will also help them in the future. Students need exceptional standardized test scores and an excellent high school transcript to get into a good college; however, to be able to stay in college, students need excellent reading skills across the content areas. This class will help students develop the reading skills they need not only to stay in college, but to excel and rise to the top of their class. Make sure that your student has the reading skills he or she needs, now and in the future. Dear Parents, Our Open House was successful with a whole room full of parents and students. Ten teachers came to the meeting. This year we have assembled an outstanding staff of teachers for your children. Before you think about going anywhere else, please consider us at Advance Academy for your child's high quality educational needs. We will have two sessions Monday through Friday: Session I: 6/8 -7/9 and Session II: 7/13 -8/7. We have another session, Saturday only, 6/6 - 8/8. The morning session will include three classes, for upcoming 3rd-6th graders, and will be held from 9:00 am to 11:55 am. The afternoon session will include three classes, for 3rd-6th grades, and will be held from 12:00 pm to 4:45pm. We will have three different periods: Homework and Tutoring, 4-6th Science (3rd graders no science class but have Chinese idioms instead.), Etiquette and Art. Students must be picked up before 6:00pm. If students are enrolled in the morning session, they can participate in afternoon classes for just $24.50 per day (lunch fee not included). If not, students will have to pay full price to attend afternoon classes. The afternoon session, for upcoming 7th-12th grades, will be held from 12:10pm to 7:30pm (except 7-8th grade Pre Algebra, which is from 10:25am to 11:40am in Session I). If you child is interested in Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Contest Math, Geometry, or Algebra II, they must take a pre-qualification test to determine if they are ready for the classes. They must have certain foundations in place prior to taking these classes. The test will be held May 2nd. If your child will be taking the exam, please be at the school by 5:00pm on May 2nd. There is a $10 exam fee, however if your child enrolls in the class, the fee will be refunded to you. Summer is the best time for 10th graders to begin to prepare for PSAT as well for preparing for SAT. I would like to highly recommend our Saturday SAT class. Our verbal instructor, Mr. A is from a very prestigious private school. He has previously taught here and was first introduced to us by Mr. Jim Saltzman. The students preparing for college entrance should not miss this opportunity to learn from the best in Houston. Last year, we held a seminar on applying to college with a St. John Teacher, Ms. Childress. She will be one of our instructors in Session 2 for Calculus and AP Calculus. Please take some time and take a look at what we have to offer. You will not be disappointed with the results. Every month I will choose one topic to discuss with you. This time I would like to share with you the thought that history is an important subject. If your child spends six weeks in the summer squeezing in a whole year of history material to receive school credit, in the long run, you will learn this way was harmful for your child. Language skills acquired from history classes are highly relevant in the real world. The broad spectrum of subjects that history encompasses includes political events, social changes, intellectual and artistic movements. Many companies, including Wall Street finance and consulting firms, come to universities to recruit and make no secret of their preference for candidates with solid writing skills. Each year these firms hire a large number of new graduates with majors such as history, English and political science, but no formal finance or business education. Private high schools do not accept credit for short term learning, but many public schools do. That is one difference in education philosophy. One of Yale's professors, Dr. Kagan, has given us an answer about why people should study history. "You only know why people should study history after you have studied history." Many high school counselors strongly recommend that students not take short period credit course just to receive a better GPA. At Advance Academy, we give the students a broad overview of subjects they will face so they are better prepared in their school studies. We are not trying to replace the classes held throughout the school year. We have seen many students achieve great success after attending our programs. There have even been students who wished they had started with us in their earlier grades.
The school year is almost over. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing you this summer! Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Contest Math, Geometry, or Algebra II感兴趣,他们必须参加一个资格考试来确认他们是否能上课。
